When a series consistently brings a smile to your face every time the protagonist beams or when you witness a couple’s romance blossoming through heartfelt exchanges, you know it’s done something right. This 13-episode Taiwanese show, with each episode running about 25 minutes, is one such gem. It skillfully balances love with practicality, sprinkled with humorous moments that make you want to dive into the next episode immediately.
Zi Xiang hails from a wealthy family and is in Taiwan from the US to finalize a real estate deal. Accompanied by his assistant Jonathan, Zi Xiang is reluctant about the family business and feels trapped in his circumstances. However, things take a turn when the deal comes with risks, leading to several attacks that force them to stay in a safe house. Jonathan grows frustrated with Zi Xiang’s attitude and refuses to assist with personal matters.
Enter Shao Peng, a deaf and mute individual aspiring to be a caretaker. Unfortunately, his disability makes it hard for him to find a job. Their paths cross first when Shao Peng saves Zi Xiang’s life and later when he delivers food. Using a translation device, Shao Peng communicates with others and is also skilled in lip reading. After Zi Xiang sustains an injury, he offers Shao Peng a caretaker position. Initially hesitant due to Zi Xiang’s demeanor, Shao Peng eventually agrees, especially after Zi promises to leverage his connections for long-term employment.
As they begin to live together, the two boys gradually warm up to each other, learning more about one another. Zi Xiang even starts to learn sign language and eventually confesses his love for Shao Peng. Though Shao Peng is uncertain at first, he ultimately embraces his feelings, leading to an unshakeable bond between them. Minor conflicts arise from family and cousins, but they face these challenges together. The series also explores Jonathan’s budding romance with a petty criminal and features Shao Peng’s supportive family and best girlfriend, who may secretly harbor feelings for him.
The chemistry between the two leads is undoubtedly the highlight of the show. It’s refreshing to see a BL series that represents the differently-abled community. Shao Peng is portrayed as a positive and resilient character, showcasing both strength and vulnerability, with the actor delivering a commendable performance. His strong support system empowers him to navigate accessibility challenges effectively.
Zi Xiang initially appears to be someone who enjoys a life of privilege while avoiding responsibilities. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that his carefree attitude masks deeper dissatisfaction with his circumstances. He evolves from self-centeredness to a person capable of empathy and love. Together, they create a magical couple dynamic, particularly highlighted by Zi’s charming smile and playful eyes, which always seem to hint at mischief. Their love story is beautifully crafted, as they develop an intimate language to express their affection despite coming from different worlds.
Although Jonathan isn’t the main character, he plays a significant role and is undeniably attractive in his business suits and glasses, exuding sexiness and sophistication. He deserves a lead role of his own soon. Supporting characters like Shao Peng’s parents and friends contribute to a lively family atmosphere.
One notable complaint I had was towards the end when Zi’s fiancé and a scheming cousin make their entrances. Some of these plot points felt unnecessary and could have been omitted to maintain the focus on the pure love story. Nonetheless, the show shines in its charming moments, passionate romance (which often turns physical), heartwarming family interactions, and an A+ lead cast. The actors excel at conveying the emotions necessary for the audience to connect with their characters, making this series an incredibly enjoyable watch.
