Settle Down (Web Series) (Canada)

There’s such a scarcity of good comedy content out there that anything new tends to be met with high anticipation. I didn’t know much about this six-part Canadian series before watching it, but I was happy to find myself pleasantly surprised. *Settle Down* is exactly the type of light queer comedy we need right now. It dives deep into relationships, exploring the many forms they take and the diverse challenges they present, both real and imagined. Each episode focuses on different client stories, addressing issues like anxiety, commitment struggles, and unconventional relationships. These personal stories touch on various aspects of queer love, dating, and sex, giving the series depth and relevance.

The central character is Mason, who runs a podcast about love and relationships, while also operating a matchmaking business for queer individuals—a refreshing break from the usual dating apps. He’s been married to Jarod for a few years, with Jarod being a supportive partner, but recently, Jarod feels sidelined by Mason’s growing work commitments. This neglect is ironic, considering Mason’s role as a relationship expert, discussing love and connection on his podcast. Over the course of the six episodes, Mason struggles with finding a balance between his work and personal life, which begins to jeopardize his flourishing love business and his marriage. Along the way, we meet various clients who share their unique stories, while we also witness Mason’s dynamics with his best friend, Ben, who is dealing with his own on-again, off-again relationship with a handsome guy and grappling with body positivity issues. We’re also introduced to a colleague of Mason’s, a girl who works with him, and a new barista friend that Ben and Mason make over time. These characters, with their antics and advice, add humor and richness to the narrative, helping Mason navigate a world where love is rarely perfect but always worth fighting for. When Jarod reaches his breaking point, they attend relationship counseling, but Mason, despite being a so-called love expert, finds himself unable to save his own marriage.

*Settle Down* offers a fresh perspective on the complexities of relationships. It tackles themes such as anxiety, commitment problems, and unconventional love in a way that feels real and relatable. The series doesn’t turn overly sentimental but instead presents these challenges with humor, making it easy for the audience to both laugh and find comfort in the characters’ struggles. It reinforces the idea that no relationship is perfect and that no person is flawless. Relationships require constant effort, and one can never take their partner for granted. One of the key takeaways from the show is that poor communication is often the downfall of relationships, and *Settle Down* addresses this issue with great precision.

It’s also worth mentioning that the show was created by people of color, which is a much-needed representation in the industry. The diverse community depicted in the show adds a layer of authenticity that enriches the narrative. *Settle Down* does what so many other series fail to do: it effectively captures the balancing act of being ambitious while still being accountable to those we love. Kudos to the creators and director, who also plays Mason in the lead role. The acting is outstanding across the board, with every cast member bringing their character to life in a meaningful way. From the visuals to the locations, outfits, and the thoughtfulness behind each character’s creation, everything is meticulously designed to make each individual stand out in their own way, while remaining in harmony with the overall feel of the show.

I thoroughly enjoyed *Settle Down*, and it’s the kind of series we need more of. It mirrors the real-life challenges we face in our everyday lives without overburdening us with unnecessary stress. It’s refreshing to see a show that manages to balance humor, heart, and authentic representation so effortlessly. This is a series that will resonate with anyone looking for a meaningful, lighthearted show that portrays the complexities of love and relationships in a genuine, relatable manner.
